Zehrs Markets

Zehrs at Laurentian Power Centre in Kitchener

Zehrs is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Emory Zehr and sons Lester and Clifford opened the first Zehrs store in Kitchener, Ontario, in July 1950. The first Zehrs Market was located at 100 Highland Road West at West Avenue and now there are more than 50 stores in southwestern Ontario. This is the Zehrs store I shop at most often.

  1. I remembered when the first “big” Zehrs opened in Stratford. My nephew worked there and he would talk about it. One day we went for a visit and thought we were at a mall. Grocery shopping (or any shopping) is not my favorite thing to do. I think I dislike it because I get discourage at the over pricing.

  2. A Realtor colleague now deceased shared with me that the original Zehrs store was at the northwest corner of Weber and Wilhelm Streets. He used to deliver groceries on his bicycle for Mr Zehr.

    • Perhaps Mr Zehr had a store which predated the “original” Zehrs Market. I took the information under the picture from Zehrs’ website. Thanks for commenting.
