“Moments” by Gerry Houghton at McLennan Park

McLennan Park, Kitchener

The newest sculptures in the City of Kitchener are far more interesting than the infamous “worm” in front of the courthouse on Frederick Street. The Pedestrian on the parking garage at Charles and Benton Streets is easily understood as is this new art in McLennan Park on Ottawa Street in Kitchener. The park officially opens tomorrow and the festivities and events are detailed here.

(McLennan Park , 901 Ottawa St. South, on Saturday, Aug. 13, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.)

Title: Moments
Year: 2011
Artist: Gerry Houghton
Medium: Aluminum
“Moments”, the new public art work at McLennan Park, is a 5-metre tall aluminum sculpture. Four figures are grouped together: cyclist, skateboarder, walker, and ice skater, to celebrate the spirit of recreation at McLennan Park.

Canada Day 2011 Celebrations at Columbia Lake

This event is the most searched topic on this blog by a very large margin. People are already looking for information on the annual fireworks display at Columbia Lake. The University of Waterloo and the Federation of Students organize the family oriented activities which run from 2PM to 11PM on July 1st. They rely on community sponsors and volunteers to make the day a success.

The UW Canada Day Celebrations website provides all the information you need to know including a list of activities, directions, free parking information and opportunities to volunteer or contribute to the event.

Earth Day Celebration at Huron Natural Area

Bald Eagle

The birds of prey show by the Canadian Raptor Conservancy was very interesting. The weather cooperated and there was an excellent turnout for this event.

Wonders of Winter at Waterloo Park

I wandered around Waterloo Park on Saturday evening after the opening of the Wonders of Winter festival of lights. Christmas music played through outdoor speakers and many people, young and old, enjoyed the displays. Make sure to take time between now and January 1st to visit the park. (map)

I am unable to leave work to attend a Remembrance Day ceremony today. I took pictures at the Galt cenotaph on Sunday, November 11, 2007 and created this slide show.

Christmas Bazaars

Christmas bazaar season has started and there are plenty of opportunities in the next month to buy crafts, food and gifts at various churches and institutions. This sign is in front of  Faith Lutheran Church at 247 Westmount Road East in Kitchener. The Record has published a list of upcoming Christmas bazaars in the region. I am making an effort to buy locally produced items this Christmas and plan to check out a few of these sales.

Saturday’s Apple Butter and Cheese Festival

Last Saturday I ended up in Wellesley – it was the Apple Butter and Cheese Festival. Missed the pancakes (yep, it was that busy!), but, I managed to have an apple dumpling…and a sample of Wellesley’s Apple Cider. Delish. Also enjoyed the market they had at the Arena close by.

One more picture is coming for tomorrow….
