Spring Storm

Courtyard at Freeport Health Centre

Spring arrived this week according to the calendar but yesterday we were walloped with our biggest snowfall of the year. The region received 25-27 cm of snow. One of my patients asked me to take her to the first floor of the hospital to see the snow and sunshine.

“It looks like Christmas!” she exclaimed happily.

December 24th…March 24th. No, this isn’t right. The Recreation therapist stopped to tell us that under that new snow, crocus plants were poking several centimetres above the ground.

Freeport Renovations

This house provided living quarters for staff who worked at the old Freeport Sanatorium. The adjacent doctor’s house was demolished a couple of years ago to make way for the construction of the new Specialized Mental Health unit which opened in 2010. This building was in disrepair but renovations are almost complete and it will be used in some capacity by the hospital. Below are pictures of the same house taken within the past 4 years.

Christmas Dinners

Each December, hospital volunteers and Recreation Therapy staff organize a Christmas dinner for each patient unit at Freeport Health Centre. That means cooking and serving two dinners a week complete with a large turkey, ham and all the fixings. Staff members bring in the side dishes and desserts. Patients and their families enjoy the festive atmosphere which includes live musical entertainment. It is my favourite event at the hospital.

Brass Portico at Freeport

Brass portico mounted in courtyard of new mental health wing

Working at Freeport Health Centre, I am surrounded by history, from the Black Walnut trees and remnants of old orchards along the Grand River to decayed buildings which were part of the original TB Sanatorium. One of the staff residences was demolished to make room for the new mental health wing which opens this week. Parts of the old house were kept and incorporated into the new building. The old brass portico which was above the door is now mounted in a courtyard in the centre of the unit. I know the old bricks were salvaged and it looks to me as if the new courtyard wall is built from those bricks. (I will need to ask about that)

Longer Term Mental Health Unit at Freeport Health Centre

Friday October 29, 2010 marked the opening of the new mental health unit at Freeport Health Centre which is part of Grand River Hospital. The new wing is bright and spacious and patients will start to arrive next week. Staff and visitors took tours throughout the day. The photographs on the walls were taken locally by people with mental health issues. They were very poignant and artistically composed. Here is a highly cropped closeup of the photograph on the pillar in the first picture.
