St. Jacob's Farmers Market

Fresh local produce is abundant now at our local farmers markets in Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge. There are several farm stores in the region as well local farm products for sale at farm lanes. Foodlink Waterloo Region’s website provides up to date information on shopping from farmers in our area.

The Record featured an article a couple of weeks ago about a Kitchener teenager, Claire Matlock, who is following the 100 Mile Diet for 18 months. Her blog is inspiring as she writes about finding and preparing local foods. Do stop and check out Cooking with Claire and make an effort to buy some fresh local food this weekend.

Elmira Maple Syrup Festival

It was a perfect early spring day for the annual Elmira Maple Syrup Festival. We arrived well before 9 AM and Arthur Street was already jammed with pedestrians. It was the busiest I have seen it in a few years and when we returned to Kitchener, the traffic was backed up all the way to Waterloo on the expressway. There is a good variety of street food for sale besides pancakes and maple syrup.

Pho Dau Bo

My first introduction to Viet-Thai cuisine was at Pho Dau Bo in downtown Kitchener a few years ago. Since then, a steaming bowl of pho is something I crave on a cold day or when my head is viral stuffy. There are now three Pho Dau Bo restaurants in Kitchener and this one on Fischer Hallman Road is very conveniently located for us. It is our favourite “fast food” takeout.

The Orange Barn

The reason I drove to Millbank this past Saturday was to visit The Orange Barn. Several times during the winter, fresh citrus fruit from Florida is sold next to Millbank Family Furniture. The prices are reasonable and several varieties and sizes of fruit are available. Their website has a list of upcoming sale dates, a price list and other information.
